A more relaxed day, staying in town. Took the Munich Hop-on, Hop-off bus tours and very much enjoyed seeing parts of the city previously unseen.

Off to Regensburg by train and
board our ship 

Well, there’s already been a wrinkle. Because of low water in the Danube, our ship can’t get upriver to Regensburg. So we will go there anyway, and they’ll bus everyone to the ship in Passau. Then, am Morgan, they’ll bus us back to Regensburg for the city tour.

Marianne, a newfound friend from the Houston airport, lives in Regensburg, picked us up at the train station, and gave us a quick tour, including the old sausage shop, Historische Wurstkurchel in Regensburg which is considered the oldest continuously operating sausage restaurant in the world, with over 850 years of history. Located on the Danube near the Stone Bridge, it has served charcoal-grilled sausages to locals and visitors since the 12th century.

So, as out turned out, they bused us all to Passau. 

But wait!! Now the river is a bit higher and if we leave right away, we can get to Regensburg overnight, 17 hours against the current.

Off again on another adventure! I have wanted since 2022 to take another river cruise, and the Danube seems perfect for that trip. My friend Carole and I are going to be exploring eight countries in eastern Europe via the Danube River. My expectation for this blog is to try to keep it simple. The Viking Var

Saturday, May 9 As we slept, the crew was busy working our way UP the Danube to get back to Regensburg. Beautiful scenery along the river, but going against the current was hard and time-consuming work.   Later, as we all sat down to dinner, the Var pulled away from the dock in Regensburg and headed south again, back overnight to Passau. Sunday, May 10 Happy Mothers’ Day!! The Viking Var , docked in Passau Passau, a German city on the Austrian border, lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers. Known as the Three Rivers City, it's overlooked by the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century hilltop fortress housing a city museum and observation tower.
